1994 900SE turbo, 100,000 km (just out from service 2 weeks ago)
would happen when I'm 150 km out of town on a Friday evening. See the dreaded CEL, so I stop, look at the engine, looks like I haven't popped any hoses, no leaks or anything. Restart, no CEL, great. Five minutes later, CEL. Stop and restart, same thing. Flash code is 6 flashes, so I get to the nearest internet cafe to check the flash codes, it's the O2 sensor.
(I was going to change it anyway after the car had a lurch or two at low rpm in bad traffic on Thursday - it has been cleaned and reseated before).
Call the agent Saturday morning, OK he's got spares. I drive 150 kms and get there at 1:30 in the afternoon. They check it and replace it, no more problem.
Mechanic says there's an uneven idle, pulls out the (almost new) DI, pulls the plugs and tests them on the DI with the TechII, one isn't quite firing right. He had to change 3 (new) different plugs before there was a strong spark! It wasn't the DI because the plugs were changed around. Great. Good idle now, but.... a little squeak, almost unnoticeable.
Pull off the serp belt, turn the pulleys by hand. Small one's good, but the larger one spun too freely. And, surprise, surprise! The metal pulley (just under the small one on the tensioner) was awful! It almost wouldn't turn and felt like it had grains of sand in the bearing.
Well, three pulleys, one serp belt, one O2 sensor and one spark plug later, I'm ready to go.
Definitely didn't do wonders to my wallet, but the car's absolutely great now. No, they did not wash the car (this time) because I was in a bit of a rush. But all this was finished by just a little after 5 pm. Had a 20 percent discount on parts, got a can of glass cleaner free (rainy weather gift),labour was a grand total of (equivalent) 25 US dollars.
Guess it's the price you pay for owning a SAAB, but I'm still smiling (sort of). And love this country (Thailand). The agent's head office is going to do repairs on a trial basis on Sundays too... :)
