Today was "work on the son's Saab day". Here's what I was able to do before passing out from the heat (hint - don't skip breakfast!):
- Changed oil w/Rotella 5W40 synthetic - sounds quieter now
- Did short-belt replacement - taking out the d*mned airbox was the worst part - but a piece of cake other than that!
- Replaced front pads and rotors. Got one of the set screws out ok, but the second one was sacraficed to my drill and some sharp bits. :-) The old pads were gone (why don't they make wear sensors on these??) and the rotors were original (106K). New zimmermans and new MetalMasters, and bled the front brakes - took about 2.5 hours including the drilling fiasco. Bedded them in and they seem to be doing pretty good. No pulsing and smooth stops. You could feel them improving as I was doing the bedding process.
Here's an odd thing that I'm not sure is related to the events. I had the tires rotated the other day and the ones now on the front aren't really round (gotta fix that when more funds are there). Anyway, after doing the brakes, I had a slight shimmy at 55 or so, but when I took my foot off the accellerator the shimmy got WORSE, and then giving it gas made it get better again! Now, I didn't do anything to the driveshafts, the rotors are factory new and not turned, and I took the wheels off and retorqued them after checking things out. Is this sort of shimmy something that would be tire related, or did I muck something up?????
Anyway, only thing left to do is the rear brakes and shocks. Oh, and the front right-side motor mount - clearance of the oil pan to the frame is real tight. Did the tranny mount a few months ago....
thx - andy
