Broken Dash Mount in a 98???

uggggg....how can a dash mount break on a 5 year old car??
I have had my 98 900 SE since new, when I took delivery, I found a big flat black screw on the drivers footwell. Saab could never figure out where it came from, so we dropped the issue (they never took apart the dash tho).
Five years later, my instrument pod gets loose, so I bring it to my independent and he tells me that the plastic tabs that hold the dash up have snapped, allowing movement in the instrument pod. The mechanic thinks the missing screw allowed for enough movement to put too much pressure on the plastic tabs.
The new part is 1100, installation maybe 300-400. I think I am screwed here, maybe I should talk to Saab customer service. I am trying to get proof of the defect, hoping to get some relief from Saab.
Do these things normally break like this? I would expect this to be a lifetime part?
