My '96 SET is pushing 96,000. I bought it 3 1/2 years ago from a dealer with about 52,000 mlies on it. I paid $16k cash , which was probably too much, but I was just off the plane from living five years in Hong Kong, I needed a car, I was a Saab loyalist, and I bought the only nice turbo I could find on anyone's lot that week. Now I figure it may be worth 1/3 of that?

The former owner did not maintain it very well, as I learned. Aside from routine maintenance, brake jobs, and some optional part upgrades (suspension, exhaust, ECU upgrade) I have had to replace both front axles (extended warranty paid it), DI cassette, a few motor mounts, serp belt and pullies, water pump (with all hoses as a precaution), heater core ($$), cooling fan unit, and ignition switch. I don't have the bills here at the office, but I'm guessing that makes about $5-6,000 out of my pocket for broken bits plus $1,200 for the extended warranty (ran out at 82,000 mi).

But what I have now is a car that is cosmetically still very nice, leaks nothing on my driveway, has never stranded me, goes like a bandit, is easy to find in parking lots (sky blue metallic isn't a common color, even for Saabs) and is worth way more to me than what little I can get for it as a trade-in.

That said, if something else expensive breaks (A/T, A/C?) and I get another $2,000 repair estimate, or if someone totals me at a stop light, I'm going to swap out the Speedparts ECU and sell it on Saabnet, then buy a new 9-5 Aero (my wife gets the GM Supplier discount). That will be Saab #7 for us.

So, I'd say drive it and enjoy it as long as you can. When it breaks or isn't fun any more, move on. That's my plan (at this point in time, anyway).

/Geoff
