A/C Problems

I have a '95 900SE with 106k miles, no major problems other than the A/C not working. I have had it in to the Saab garage, 3 times recently. First time they replaced some fittings ($200), A/C worked for about 1 month. Second time they replaced a hose($140), said there was a tiny leak in the evaporator but I should be good through the summer. 2 weeks later no A/C. They recharged it again at no charge, told me the evaporator had a bigger leak than before but that charge lasted about a week. I put some R-134a in it myself, which kept a charge for a couple days. I'm back to no A/C again since I assume due to lack of pressure the compressor won't turn on. The dealer cautioned me about replacing the evaporator since buying it thru them is so expensive ($800). I'm looking for advice on whether buying a used part is good idea (or can I get new cheaper through wholesaler on the Internet)and what I can expect in terms of labor $ to have the part installed. I'm also guessing that it's a pretty involved project for a do-it-yourselfer? Thanks
