Slipping clutch?

I've noticed recently when shifting into second and third gear on my 97 900S that the engine revs stay stationary at a high point (3 or 4 thousand rpm), especially under heavy load, but the car doesn't seem to be accelerating. After a second or two, the revs go back to normal and the car accelerates. Tonight, when starting from a stop, I had no problem in first, but when it came to shifting to second, I let out the clutch and the engine just revved up, I went nowhere, and it did not stop slipping, so I shifted into third, and it did the same thing. Finally I shifted back to second and gently eased on the gas and it seemed okay. I bought the car about a month ago and I'm dreading that this slipping is the clutch needing to be replaced. Is this the case? If so, how much should I expect to pay for a replacement?
