Hey all,
This was my productive weekend to play around on my new toy and so far, so good!
1) SAS swaybar. If you don't have this yet, get it! While it may be a bit too aggresive for the racetrack, It really helps setup the car better on exit. Easy to install too, but don't panic when 2 or 3 bolts break when you try to get them off ;)
2) Silencer removal. After pulling it out and realizing how much insulation was in the pipe, as well as realizing how close the pipe is to the downpipe, I did a cheapo move and stripped the oil-soaked insulation from the plastic silencer and wrapped the outside of the pipe nearest the exhaust with it. I then used some aluminum tape (autozone or home depot should have this stuff) I has lying around from another project and wrapped the insulation nice n' tight. Hey presto, free insulation!
3) Intake mod. I liked the concept of the 3" inlet mod, but my experiences with cone filters in other turbo cars has led me to believe that if some is good, more is better, and too much is just enough. The Abbott system is on the right track but prohibitively expensive, not too mention a bad idea using a foam filter (They don't block fine grain dirt very well at all...I've seen it demonstrated on my '90 300ZX Twin Turbo using a Greddy Airinx filter). Looking on ebay, there's all kinds of intakes available for $20-$30, and my thought is to buy one close to the Abbott design and modify the pipe to fit. So far the '00-'02 Saturn one looks to be a good fit. My plan is to also mount an insulated heat shield facing the block to avoid heat-soaking the filter in stop and go traffic.
Obviously, a ram-air setup would be nice but there's little room to put a cone filter anywhere else. For the truly hardcore, venting the hood and putting a small scoop right above the filter would be neat, but doesn't fit with my low buck approach :)
Any thoughts?
