Thanks for the responses. I replaced the expansion tank cap a couple weeks ago; it may have slowed things *slightly*. I top off when "coolant level low" comes on, about 1.5 cups, 2 cups if I overfill slightly. Frequency varies depending on driving style, which I attribute to expand/contract cycles. After the car cools down overnight, there is still some pressure in the system if I open the cap. Not a great deal but enough to cause the level to rise about 0.75".
I have checked out all of the hoses and the clamps, but I admit to not replacing a couple of them. I really do see NO coolant whatsoever on the ground. I have researched the many posts in the archives on coolant loss.
The smell in the vents is noticeable but minor. It is only after starting, so I have attributed it to coolant in the exhaust coming back through the vents. If you have a leaking heater core, wouldn't it be more persistant? This smell made me wonder about the heater core for a while, though I'm about 97% sure it's not that.
Maybe I will break down and ask a dealer to diagnose it again. I'm afraid to give them too much info, for fear someone will immediately conclude "heater core" or "head gasket" without really digging into it.
