Hi All
My engine swap is complete, as per my earlier post the battery was in fact flat and I replaced it with an Optima and the solved the not turning over problem. But now another problem has appeared. Really getting frustrated and discouraged here, so moral support and mechanical insight is much appreciated as always ;) .

The Car:
A 1997 900SE Turbo with my old 1996 900SE Turbo engine in it. 5 Speed with 100k on the engine and 135k on the car. The head, block and DI are from the 96, the Turbo, Intake and the fuel rail etc and exhaust manifold are from the 1997.

The symptoms:
Car now starts, but won't stay running. The engine turns over and cranks, and combustion seems to start, but then it immediatley hesitates, stumbles and dies. An interesting bit of information is that if it is the first attempt to start it, it seems to start better and come closer to running. Subsequent attempts are less successful. Adding more fuel to the equation seems to have little effect, whether trying from the throttle itself or the pedal in the car. Fuel seems to be reaching the rail as I can smell it. I had the car running once up to as much as 4000 rpm, but that was the first attempt after the new battery and I had to stop it from continuing as I missed a clamp on a coolant hose and I began to lose coolant.

Things I've tried:
Checked condition of all vacuum hoses, all looked sound and secure, maybe I should replace? But turbo gauge in car works fine.

Replaced FPR to a stock one (old one was crushed by prior owner)

My thoughts and questions:
The spark plugs and DI came out of working 1996 900SE Turbo, should I put in the original 1997 DI cassette? I will pull plugs asap to check condition, but I suspect something else.

Seems like its an ignition issue, or maybe I flooded the engine with gasoline that first time I ran it with overzealous use of the accelarator.

Could it be the crankshaft position sensor? I have to admit it was handled roughly and got some paint on it during the whole process.

Would techron concentrate help? A fresh tank of gas?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Nicholas

PS Sorry I didn't get a chance to check plug condition 1st, I'll post an update ASAP.

Nick
