I just replaced the shocks on my 95 900s. If you got the old ones off, that was the harder deal. But in either case, the easiest thing to do is to put a vice grips on the very top of the shaft to hold it in place while you either loosen or tighten the nut. On the oEM shocks, it had a lock nut that was a pain to get off. On the new shocks, it came with 2 nuts (that locked together) that went on real easy. In my case, I held the shaft with the vice grips and tightened the nut down as far as I could, then brought the other nut down and tightened it as well. They do make a shock tool that has a hollow "socket" to go over the shaft to the nut, and then a small "nut/socket" thing that fits over the slotted top of the shaft. But in my case they were built for american (SAE) sized nuts/slot, so I ended up using the tools I had.
