Jay, I used to work for an auto detailer when I was in high school and the way you help prevent wax smudging on the plastic trim is to first wash the car (obviously). And remember that dish soap removes wax so get a nice car wash soap by Meguires or Zymol or Griott's Garage. After washing and drying, use an armor-all type product to treat all of the plasic trim. Get the trim around the lights, basically if its black, armor-all it.
That way when you get armor all on the paint, you will clean it up when you wax and if you get wax on the treated black trim, it won't stick to it.
When you remove the wax and buff, if you see wax on a plastic trim piece, it will wipe right up.
I personally do not like armor-all. I have found that the Meguires (spelling?) armor-all stuff is really, really good. Its not too shiny and it does not attract dust.
Hope this helps!
Happy Saab'ing!
