i have been running a speedparts stg1/2 ecu (T5/1996SET) for around six months with no problems. i think this is a good route to go, and the newfound power is a lot of fun. you may want to take a look at doing some other things to ensure your car is prepared (exhaust, intake). you also might have some problems trading in a faulty ecu core for the new one (the credit is 250US approx).
how does the dealer know that your current ecu is faulty? sounds suspicious. is there any particular problem that they noted as being the factor behind the judgment on the ecu? you may want to post your issue here and maybe someone will help, or take your car to an indy, it could save you some $, unless you really do want to upgrade!
nick at genuinesaab.com is recommended for the ecu upgrades (site sponsor). if you just wanted to talk about it, he is knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with.
