AC question in non ACC system

I've just started driving an NG900 this week (acquired w/broken timing belt). The car is a 94 900S w/o ACC. I've noticed that the AC isn't very predictable. The compressor cuts out frequently. System appears to be well, maybe even over, charged but I haven't put a good gauge set on yet. When the compressor runs it's quiet and the air is very cold. How is the anti-frost switch in these cars? The first day I drove it I had water dripping on the passenger side from the evaporator. The outlet seemed clear though the inlet tongue had a load of crap in it. Another observation is that at any fan speed setting, the fan speed is noticably higher when recirculate is engaged. Is this by design or indicative of airflow retriction somewhere? My gut feeling is that the compressor cuts out in response to freeze-up as it seems to occur more readily in recirc mode.
TIA
