Ken, the actual mechanics are not that hard, but no, you can't do it properly at home. (For the record, I have not done this job.)
The A/C system has to be opened (obviously) to disconnect the condenser. First problem is that if you have refrigerant left, it has to be discharged properly. EPA rules prohibit venting of ANY refrigerant. No dice at home. Second problem is that if the A/C system is open for more than 15 minutes, you have to replace the receiver-dryer because the system is contaminated w/moisture. Third, even if you don't replace the r-d you are supposed to evacuate (vacuum) the system completely before recharging to remove any contaminants.
Some may argue about the 15 minute rule and the evac, but that's what the Saab service manual states. Here's what the official Saab manual (8:3 climate control, ACC) calls for so at least you have an idea of the job.
From the Saab manual:
1) drain A/C system of refrigerant
2) remove grill, horn, left-hand turn signal lens and headlight
3) if turbo: remove charge air cooler and pipe between this and intake manifold
4) unplug the receiver's pressure switches
5) remove 2 condenser bolts and lift out condenser
6) remove bolt in receiver's PAD connection, remove hoses, plug the openings
Installation requires new o-rings w/lubricant, 40ml of PAG oil to replace what's lost in the old condenser, evac of old system, and 800g new R134a.
Hope this helps.
