I've got a 96 900SET manual with 86k - totally stock. I bought it at 73k. Regular services and oil changes. Original battery, I think. It's been mostly well-behaved, but recently started acting up.

Problem: After running the gas almost to dry, I filled up with Super as always. Less than a block from the gas station, the idle dropped to 500 revs unless I stayed on the gas, finally stalled out reeking of fuel. Brought it to an indie shop and he replaced the NGK plugs. It was the second time in a year and he told me I blew a plug up - I didn't ask to see it, unfortunately so I can't describe what it looked like. The car then ran OK for the balance of the tank of gas.

Refilled it again and the same problem happened - revs dropped, car started bucking and would have stalled out had I not finessed it back to the office. This time I parked it for the afternoon and tried it again about 4 hours later. Still not good, but after the engine warmed back up, the problem was almost gone. Now when I start the car, it kind of "coughs" once or twice, then settles into a decent idle at just under 1k.

Basically, between the above mishaps and what seems like excessive cranking to get started in the morning, I just don't have any confidence that it won't die again.

From doing some research on the board, it seems like my first step is the replace the vacuum lines (I took a quick look at them and it's not pretty - very dry and brittle, but no gaping holes).

First question (2 parts), (a) is there any benefit to these silicon hoses some people mentioned other than looks and (b) I saw at least 1 person said to go down to 3.5mm from the stock 4mm - is this a widely held view?

Second question regarding vacuum lines is: are they all only 4mm I.D. or are there some of different I.D. and where do I find them (most posts refer just to the 4mm variety)?

If the vacuum line changes don't work, I will embark on the board's list of things of basic things to try, unless someone recognizes the "fuel fill-up and die" problem as something they've seen before. One thought I had was it might be a fuel pressure issue as it seems to work better as it goes thru the tank of gas and only exhibits the really harsh symptoms right after filling up (but I have no real basis for that thought).

Other questions:
-is 86k about it for the original battery?
-can I get a Haynes NG900 manual anywhere in the states (or only from the UK)?

Sorry for the length - Thanks
