The switch has a number of contact points, I think about 5. One or more of these goes bad. See previous posts by SWEDECAR (Anders) on which ones usually go bad and what this affects. If you have a wiring diagram, you can isolate the areas.
My symptom of a bad switch was erratic idiot lights (esp ABS) and then the car died while driving along normally. But others do have trouble starting sometimes. It varies.
Resistance from turning the key could be related to the switch. The lock tumbler that corresponds to your specific key is NOT part of the switch; it's on top of it. But this engages with the ignition switch which has a spring mechanism to swing the key back to "on" from "start" position. After I replaced the ignition switch on my 1994 900 S in June, I noticed a difference in how turning the key felt.
Old part number was #4409553 (marked made in Germany)
New part number was (got from eeuroparts.com) #4946307 (marked made in UK)
