I had the same problem and repaired it the same way and also made my own bracket with $2.20 worth of parts from Home Depot. The thing to remember is always have with you a way to undo that clamp should you have a motor or other failure that leaves you stuck with the top down. The release handle will not fuction as long as the clamp is wrapped around the motor.
