You're sure you want to do this, right??
OK. You will need a new ECU, because the one in the 2.3 has no software for the detonation sensor or other turbocharger related stuff. I think the gearboxes interchange, but you may want to check with you mechanic or your local boneyard (they have crossreference data for all cars built for sale in America). It may depend on the year or even the time the car was built as to whether or not you'll be swapping just the engine or the entire drivetrain (early model year vs later in the model year. Saab was prone to making unannounced improvements as they went along, and a lot of us have found out the hard way when things break its replacement is not a mirror image of the worn out part!)
You also have to consider the car's underpinnings. The S and SE differed greatly suspension-wise. Yes, I know that Saab sold the turbo in the 900S in 1997 and 1998, but they also did some needed updates to the suspension at the same time. It's still not the same as an SE, tho. Remember the adage "power is nothing without control??" It fits in this case. I've driven S turbos, and they don't handle half as well as a stock 900SE. With approximately 35 extra HP under the hood, you may want to be judicious with the use of your right foot in a 900S.
Maybe it would be better if you just looked for a well cared for '94 or '95 SEt?????
