Hi,
Sorry to hear about another RIP. But in both cases, I think both cases are do-able with a friend's help. I am in the process of putting everything back from a head gasket replacement, and it wasn't too difficult to put disassemble and put everything back. (Although I sheared off a temp sensor). Plus, I learned ALOT. What helped me out the most is the Saab Repair Manual. Go to EEuroparts.com and browse through what they have (I bought the Saab Repair manual there). The timing chain and balance chain rebuild should run at the most $400 in parts, and may be need some tools, max $500, that you get to keep at the end. I'm not sure about rods, but in the repair manual, they had a procedure for rod build up as well. Haynes manual is helpful as a cross reference. I do know that for timing chain repair, you have to take the engine out. FOr rod repair, I think you can get at it from the bottom. Anyways, for me, it was a great experience. Saved about $700, kept all the tools, gained knowledge. I'm kinda looking forward to a next breakdown... (I must be crazy)
:) Good luck
