Oil in the distributor does not make the cable set go bad, or visa versa. Ditto for plugs. If you need them, great, if you don't you don't.
Oil leaking out past the distributor shaft seals will not hurt the cat. If you went in promptly with the CEL the misfiring will not have trashed the cat, if not, who knows.
Sludge is mostly associated with dyno oil and perhaps lack of oil changes. But that would not cause the distributor shaft seal to go.
Pull the plugs your self and read the deposits if any. If the cat was non functional the O2 sensor post cat should have thrown a cel too, at least that is what it is for in my understanding. If the plugs are dark, the combustion chamber will be fouled too. Techron concentrate will clean some of that up as well as the injectors.
