Here is how you do it...
get an insulated wire that is about 5 feet long (I used the wire from an old lamp...)
strip and connect a couple of alligator clips to the wire (one at each end... and on ONE side of the wire... *grin*)
Leaning over the front of the car, look down into the engine compartment on the left hand side(passenger side in the US) you will see the serp. belt running straight down from the top of the engine to a pulley on the bottom. That lower pulley is the pulley for the compressor.
You will see a wire going to the compressor... that wire goes "into" the compressor (at about the middle of the compressor, under the lower radiator hose [next to the serpentine belt]) from there it jumps back out and toward the pulley and back into the compressor.
(see if you can follow this...) between those 2 points is a connector that looks like a rubber sheath with ribs on it (not the one that looks like a hard plastic tube)... hold the wire at each side and pull apart to release the connector. You will have one short black wire going into the compressor closer to the pulley (male end) and the rubber "boot" (covering the female end) going into the compressor under the radiator hose.
Connect the alligator clip to the male end make sure all the wires are away from the pulleys and exhaust components. (I drape the wire outside the engine compartment over the grill and headlights...)
touch the alligator clip at the other end of the wire to the positive terminal of your battery... if you did this right and your compressor is not shot, you will hear a "click" from the compressor as you touch the wire to the positive terminal. (this engages the ac compressor clutch)
Start the car and fill the AC... PLEASE make sure to have a pressure gauge for the low side and follow the guidelines other ppl have posted about AC pressure (as well as watching the sightglass...)I am assuming you know for sure it is a low gas level and not a fried compressor thermo switch (or other problem)
good luck
