Most likely the sender is bad. So a gauge won't help.

I just did this repair and it isn't too bad. Many thanks to Dean and Steve B. These are some links I used. Here are some things I found out on my own:

I used a 1/2" drive socket with the socket and extension not fully seated, like Dean suggests. I bought a deep 22mm (or 24mm, I can't remember now) socket but had interference problems with the oil filler tube. Some have suggested moving it, it seemed pretty well attached to the oil pan on my vehicle. I know I used a 15/16" socket to remove the old one and that the replacement I bought from eEuroparts needed a different socket size than the one I removed. I accidently broke the spade connector off the broken sender, which makes it easy to remove.

I had a hard time finding the thing, but it really isn't too hard to find. I think I'm just bad at identifying engine parts. Get under the car and look towards the front of the car on the engine block. The alternator is a great reference point. Mine was above it and to the left, more towards the center of the car.

I used a 6" extension for the 1/2" drive socket - 3" isn't long enough to clear the oil filler tube.

Sears had some medium deep sockets which looked like they would work with a 3/8" driver but didn't go to a large enough size for this job. If you can find some big enough, this might be another option.

It's a really easy job - I think it could be done in less than ten minutes if you were familiar with the sender. The part is less than $5, although I had to buy some tools to do the work.

Good luck!
