John, it is definitely a result of leaking valve cover gaskets. You'll need new ones. The front is a breeze to replace; the rear is somewhat more involved.
Note that besides new gaskets, the issue of how to properly SEAL the valve cover gaskets is a subject of discussion among V6 owners. There are many posts from early 2003 or late 2002 that I was involved in along with several others. I have had good luck with Permatex Hylomar. I used a THIN bead all along the edge. It seems that blue silicone is bad, although it is factory spec. It can make things worse. But I've still got blue silicone on the corners only on my rear cover (before I knew better), sealed at 125k and still running strong. Seems I'm an exception though.
SWEDECAR (Anders) said last week that he thought the best solution was just to replace the valve covers with this kind of mileage. They're cheesy plastic but still cost $113 each.
