CEL, but running fine

1996 900SET 5-door 5-speed 130K.
I started the car this morning and it had the CEL on. It ran fine last night driving home with no light. It is still running fine this morning even with the light constantly lit. Stopped and started it twice on the way to work and the light is still on but everything seems normal.
I called my mechanic and they said that it can take up to an hour and $150 to pull the codes and diagnose. I didn't realize it was that complicated.
I don't know what to check since the car seems fine - normal boost, normal sounds. Thanks to an earlier post, I've realized that my oil pressure light doesn't come on when starting the car so I ordered a new pressure sensor but I don't think that would trigger the light since it's been like that for a while and the oil level checked fine this morning.
After owning Saabs for many years, this is my first car with a CEL and a computer in it. I'm not sure how to react to the CEL and how serious of a warning it is.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
David
