If you have the slightest inclination that the cable may be stretching or failing, I would recommend that you have it changed *now* especially if you've exceeded about 45k miles (in mixed city/highway) driving on the current cable.
My first cable failed at just around 77k miles but I had been doing 85% highway driving. So be forwarned.
I think the biggest difference between hydraulic and cable clutch is to be felt when starting from an incline (the streets of San Francisco come to mind). The cable clutch is incredibly hard to modulate to balance between full engine stall, and enough slip to start up the incline. The hydraulic clutch by comparison (and I've driven a 98 900 to compare), is easy to control and smoothly engages the clutch.
