First of all, the car is 10 years old, like mine (94SE). Big ticket items that can fail are engine, trans, and A/C. Any of these can cost a couple of grand. At this point your car is not worth anything except to you, whether you realize it or not, you have already made the decision to drive it into the ground. My rule of thumb after 5 Saabs is that, reasonably maintained, they are good for 150k. Beyond that, you roll the dice and repairs come more frequently. I look to replace at 150k.
If you have a good indie mechanic that you trust, keeping it is a plus. Have him check it out thoroughly to make sure no major problems around the corner. You already know that this (Saabnet) is the best resource on the internet in all cardom.
If the car meets your needs and you still enjoy driving it and the car has been well maintained and still looks good, putting some dollars into it makes sense. Your insurance and property taxes are low because it is an older car. You can park wherever you want without fear of a door ding. Driving some new cars lately convinced me that I really liked mine better and it wasn't worth a committment to years of car payments to something that did not really float my boat anyway.
In a perverse way, many of us here like a little occasional tinkering anyway, and the box at the door from Talliaferro or Eeuroparts puts a smile on our faces, and provides us with a sense of accomplishment when the job is done.
