I live in Geneseo ~25 mi S of Rochester but work @ UB. I've been driving a 95 900 SET 5spd for a few months. I have exactly the same problem (reverse pop-out). The mechanic I talked to said it was a pinion bearing in the transmission. It is an expensive fix because they have to drop the tranny and tear it down. I'm learning to live with it by holding the shifter in hard.
I was not thrilled to find out that the Saab dealer in a rich suburb 35 mi away gets $74/hr shop rate. They charged me for a full hour to replace the clutch switch for the cruise control (a $20 part). I have had to take it back twice and it still does not work.
I would like to hear back from you to find out if you have a better $ situation. I would also like a 2nd opinion on the rev pop problem
