Hi all,
This is the latest Saab puzzle I had to figure out. Everything in the ACC system seemed to work fine except for the fan. It didn't run at all. So after checking the various fuse possibilities, I then assumed it was probably the cabin fan motor. I proceeded to rip out the wiper linkage and get down to the cabin air intake where the motor is. Jumping the motor over the battery showed that the motor was working. (Take care if you do this - motor may jump out of your hand if not secured - and by the way, most internet sites want $450 for the motor/fan assembly - sick). After finding the fan to be OK I tested the hot wire to the fan and it registered ~13V as it should. The problem was in the ground, and lacking a good circuit diagram (Haynes doesn't have it), I almost gave up and took my jar of Vaseline to the dealer. Then after making my appt with the dealer I looked very hard on the web to find any other info on the problem. I found one site (in the given URL) with info - LOOK AT BULLETIN 871-1847. Our dealer had no such bulletin and could not find the part number for the new fan control which it mentions.
This sounded like my problem so I decided to give it a shot. Note: the fan controller which is to be replaced has a different part number than the one you may have on there, and has seven pins instead of six (like the new one). This concerned me, but it was the only one the dealer had record of and it worked great.
To replace the fan controller -
1. Remove the glove box
2. Remove black plastic shroud, below and left of the glove box.
3. Remove the side plastic to the center console.
4. Taking out the heat duct - does to dash helped me a lot.
5. The fan controller is attached to a heat sink on the evaporator housing, find it, then mess with wires for long time to disconnect old and plug in new. Before attaching new controller, put di-electric grease or silicone grease which will help with heat transfer.
6. Refit is reverse of removal (I always wanted to say that)
I hope this saves someone time. I would have loved to find this post.
