Engine Update

Here's an update to a July 22 posting about my '94 900SE engine dying and sounding like it had one foot in the grave and one on a banana peel when I'd try to restart it.
The responses I got then pointed toward the idler pulley. However, when we got the engine apart, the idler pulley was in good shape. In fact, a check with a Saab dealer showed that it'd been changed only 5000 miles previously, or so. In the end, we still don't know what happened. The serpentine belt and another belt were torn up and one of the cams was advanced a shocking 270 degrees. Fortunately, the only damage was to the six exhaust valves (plus a little head work). The mechanic that worked on it believes coolant that was leaking like a sieve from the water pump during that time softened the belts and they eventually slipped. (I didn't mention the water pump in my original posting, because, in my ignorance, I didn't know it was anywhere near the belts.)
Anyway, the car runs smoothly today again though I have to admit that I'm worried that it could happen again considering that we couldn't exactly ID the problem.
Until next time,
Chris
