1994 900 SE turbo 3 dr hatchback
110,000 km (about 60,000+ miles)
I got suspicious when I saw a lot of steam coming from the exhaust. Okay, it's normal to have some steam, but when it warmed up, it started producing clouds of it. Couldn't find any external leaks, and I top off the coolant reservoir only about once every 2 months. The car also seemed a bit down on power with a slight variation at idle.
Brought it to the dealer, they retorqued the head and did a compression test. Cylinders 3 and 4 were a bit low, so I opted for them to remove the head so they could check the HG, head, valves etc.
They found the HG going (it was the original), but there was very little erosion. They also checked the valves and head. The valves seal OK, but the head needs to be resurfaced. They also did say they were going to check the stroke (in case a slightly bent piston rod was causing loss of compression. They haven't called back so that's a relief).
Hope to get the car back Tuesday. (If the head didn't need resurfacing, I'd have gotten it back the same day :)
