My girlfriend has a non-turbo '96 900S with 100,000 miles on it. She has been hearing a grinding/whirring noise in the LF fender area for a while. Today, the dealer said that she needs a new SAI pump and check valve at a cost of $550 (parts and labor).

As I understand it, the SAI system injects air into the exhaust gases so that combustion can continue in the exhaust system, and, that it that there is sufficient oxygen in the exhaust gas so that the catalytic converter can perform properly.

Is that a reasonable price for the repair?

Are rebuilt or aftermarket pumps and valves available?

How difficult a job is it for a somewhat experienced shade-tree mechanic?

What are the short and long terms risks of not replacing the pump and valve relatively soon?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
