Battery discharging overnite even with all fuses pulled

I have a 98 SET, 45k miles. On a recent (thankfully short) trip home the car exhibited signs of a lack of electrical power - radio and a/c fan fading off and on. Limped home by turning a/c off, next morning car was dead.
Hoping for a cheap fix, bought new battery, it too died when left in car overnight.
Pulled fuses for non-essential things (seat adjust, elec window, etc), battery still drained (per my voltmeter.)
Pulled ALL fuses both inside car and under hood, battery still draining, and rather rapidly (depleted battery went from 5v to 4v in 30 minutes).
Final clue: when running at idle, voltage fluxuates rapidly between 12 and 12.5v, settles at 13v when revved to 1500 rpm.
I am tempted to try to get at relays, but could there be a short in the alternator/voltage regulator? Hoping my alternator is not shot at only 45k miles...
Thanks in advance
