Miriam--
I'm not sure if your son has a 900S (base model) or an SE (more upmarket). The 900S has a 2.3 litre naturally aspirated engine. The SE came as a 3 door coupe (turbocharged 2.0 litre) or a V6 (five door). If he has the 5 door SE V6, good luck to him. The issues with that particular car are many--he should peruse the NG900 Bulletin Board for specific posts on the trials and tribulations of owning a V6 900. My guess is, that if it has 190K, then it's NOT a V6, and therefore a 2.3 or a turbo.
The 2.3's biggest problem (other than oil leaks around the distributor) is a tendency to accumulate sludge under the valve cover if the former owner(s) were lax about oil changes. Saab says that you should change the oil every 7500 miles--that's a rule of thumb. I have the oil in both of my NGs (a '94 S and a '95 SEt) changed every 5K. (The S has over 270K on the odo, the SEt has 228K).
Turbocharged engines were usually the most reliable of the bunch. Again, maintenance is key here. In addition to faithful oil changes, you need to make certain that the cooling system is flushed every 30K. The turbocharger is water-cooled, so the engine should never be run low on coolant. If the car came with service records, it would be a good idea to check when the last time the thermostat was replaced--I usually have the one in the SE changed every 60K (every second large service, which is, for us, every other year.) Cheap insurance against a boil-over.
Which ever Saab he has, as long as he follows the maintenance schedule in the owners' manual, his Saab should have a long and happy life.
Good luck!
