My Lower Idler Pulley broke off!

Hi everyone,
On the highway, the serpentine belt came off after the lower idler pulley (the one above the crankshaft pulley) lost its bearing. The pulley is currently dangling between the shaft and the side of the body.
I continued to drive the car another 30 km on the highway without too much incident. The power steering was gone, and the alternator was gone. The car barely restarted after trying to restart. Anyhow, on the highway, I noticed the engine temp did not rise significantly but after I popped the hood, the coolant resevoir was empty. If the water pump stopped turning after the belt came off, would it be reasonable to assume the coolant simply evaporated from overheating and non-circulation? Or maybe something else? Again, I don't think the car overheated considerably given the engine temp needle during the drive.
I'm going to have the mechanic put on a new belt by-passing the lower idler pulley, as per the modification widely promoted on this board.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
