bad thermostat question

I think my thermostat is toast on my 95 900SE as a result of a blown coolant line last fall after which my car got "quite hot" on the short ride home.
The car drove well all last winter however the engine temperature reading on the dashboard guage took a very long time to get to normal temperature.
My local indie mehanic said That I don't really need to change the themostat.
Any thoughts or suggestions
Thanks
