This is just a follow up for those of you with convertibles that have had the rear defogger stop working because of a detached tab on the defogger.

Last spring one of the tabs connecting to the rear defogger grid detached on my 97 Talladaga convertible. I did what many would do. I went to the local auto parts store (Canadian Tire in my case) and picked up a 2 stage conductive glue kit to repair and re-attach the to the defogger grid.

All went well and the bond was very strong. Problem is now with fall here the defogger was not defogging. The trusty DVM told me there was voltage getting to the tabs and there was a solid conductive/resistive path from one side of the grid to the other. The location where the tab was glued was not however conductive.

I ended up gently cleaning the area with alcohol after lightly sanding away to clear conductive areas on the grid and tab (ie.. removing excess glue). I then took out the soldering gun, covered over areas of the car interior and rear deck so the solder and flux splatter would not damage anything. I opened the convertable top to it's first phase, where it folds back the rear window, allowing easy access to the inside of the window while I worked outside and soldered the connection together.

There are 3 major disadvantages to this approach:
1. It's a bit messy; at least by my standards. You do not end up with a perfect solder joint due to the large area that must be quickly heated to avoid damage to the glass and the grid.

2. The wind cools the gun down so do not try to use a flat paddle type tip at the end of the gun. Heat just a small area and be done quickly.

3. You are heating a piece of glass so you could end up damaging it so be careful and quick. Clean the area before starting, gently so you don't remove any of the conductive grid.

The defogger is now functional again. The conductive glue was not at all conductive but served as a very strong bong to hold the tab in place.

One last thing; if I had thought of it sooner I would have done the glue then used conductive tape instead of solder.

Hope this helps others.
