The pump on my girlfriend's car was constantly making noise and it eventually set off her Check Engine Light. Since the dealer reset the light, however, there hasn't been any noise and the light has not come on again... which leads us to think that the mechanic may have disabled the pump altogether.

Regarding the emissions impact, from what I have read elsewhere, on Saabs these pumps only run for the first 90 seconds while the system is warming up. If that is true, I would think that the environmental impact of not repairing the pump would be minimal.

The dealer told my girlfriend she needed a pump and a valve... and with labor that would cost $ 550. Used pumps are available for $100. I got the following response from Andrews of Princeton regarding my parts inquiry:

"The best thing you can do is change both valves according to the guys here. If your other valve goes out it will take the SAI pump out again. I carry all the parts you need. The cost of the pump is $310.00. The cost of the check valve is $55.00. The cost of the switching valve is $45.80."
