I think the 98 900SE is the best 900 and better than the early 9-3s. Just look at all the 1999 9-3s out there.
I would look hard at the service records, and general condition of the seats (tells you what kind of miles were put on it). You want to see if the tranny has been fixed...there is a service bulletin on it, if it has not been done, it can cost a lot. Mine was not done, and there are quirks to getting it out of reverse and with initial clutch play in the morning. I have 50k on mine, and I don't think the tranny is weak or going to break, but it is not as it should be.
I have quite a bit of performance stuff on my 98, and I love it...would not trade it for anything.
