Check engine (CEL) shouldn't be related to the coolant; it's generally emissions and engine management stuff. Very common cause is an oxygen sensor, but don't go replacing these yet, esp. if you want to reduce costs! I think you have only one oxygen sensor since it's pre-96 and not a V6.
A dealer or shop should be able to pull the CEL code(s) from the computer of the car even if the CEL is not on constantly. That would give you a definitive answer.
Can you give us mileage on your 95 900 S? Engine? (2.3 I assume.) Have the oxygen sensors ever been changed? They are supposed to last 100,000 miles but many folks go longer, 125,000 miles or more.
I had an intermittent CEL that came on at highway speeds. As soon as I let up on the gas at all, the light would go out. Dealer gave me the code P0135 I think which was one of the 02 sensors. I replaced that one for two reasons: (1)age of my car (130k miles) since they sensors were original, and (2)we had a head gasket leak which could have damaged them anyway. That replacement worked for 6+ months, but now I'm getting the same deal again. Next time I'm at the dealer I'll ask them to pull the code, and I suspect it will be for the other sensor. I have two since a V6.
