My Saab has been pretty reliable since I bought it with 76k miles. However, it has developed a very annoying habit of sputtering and jerking once the car is warmed up. When driving with a very light foot everything is normal. However, even pulling away from a stop sign at a pace quicker than the local horse and buggies accelerate, the engine sputters. On cold mornings the car runs great - smooth acceleration and lots of power. I listed the details below. I have searched the Bulletin Board and have found similar problems, but I'm wondering if this is something obvious. I am not very knowledgeable but did manage to replace the valve cover gaskets and spark plugs myself. I have tried Techtron 2 and other additives but none seem to help.
The engine check light has been on since 85k. The Saab dealer diagnosed a knock sensor problem. A local mechanic investigaged and got different error codes. The dealer and local mechanic both suggested I simply keep driving it because the car seemed to run just fine at the time.
The car:
1994 900S, 2.5 V6, 5-sp, 112K miles
The symptoms:
1. Car hesitates and jerks.
2. "TCS Off" lights and cannot be reset until car is restarted.
When symptoms occur:
1. When car is warmed to normal operating temperature. (It doesn't matter what the air temperature is.)
2. Sustained speeds of 70+ mph.
3. During "lead foot" driving conditions - during acceleration that starts from any speed or RPM.
4. If the engine is cold, especially upon startup in 40-degree temps, the car runs great until the engine warms.
Background:
New timing belt, water pump at 95k by dealer
New valve cover gaskets, spark plugs by me at 107k
New fuel pump & filter at 108k (this problem existed before this repair)
