Squeak/Groan from front wheel - CV?

OK - 2 weeks ago I replaced the front stanchion arm bushing. Slowly, over the last 2 weeks, a groan/squeak noise has started eminating from the area (right front). It's never seen at speed (20mph+), but when moving slow and applying the brake, you get the squeak/groan noise. Sounds like rubber (not metal on metal) and definitely not a brake pad noise.
Pulled the front wheel tonite, and found the outer CV joint boot leaking on that side. The rubber is checked/dry and mucking with the stanchion arm bolt probably nicked the rubber and started it leaking. Here's the quandry - can a leaking boot cause the sort of noise I'm hearing? There isn't a ton of grease except on the boot itself (no spray). You don't hear the typical click noise when a joint is bad, but if it's losing grease, it might make this noise? Odd thing is that low-speed braking and turning make the noise worse........
thx for ideas - andy
