Hi Eric C,
You must depressurise the fuel system before you begin working on the fuel filter replacement or else you risk getting fuel spills beyond what you hoped for. Depressurizing the system is easy - start the car, then pull out the fuel pump fuse (look in your owner's manual). The engine will stop sooner or later as it will run out of fuel. There will still be some pressure, but nothing major. Always wrap the fittings on the fuel filter with rags in case there is some spray and keep the elements (dirst, dust, greasy hands..) out of there. Also, make sure you replace the washers and not only the filter.
