If the ID has 87K miles, the DI is at or near EOL. Even more so if the DI is the original from 1995.
If the DI is original and has not failed, I would want a new one as a spare whatever the outcome.
You can put 4 plugs in the DI, and you must ground them, then crank and watch for sparks. The system may attempt to spark clean the plugs a bit after shut down... danger!
Any hint of the burnt plastic/epoxy smell of death from the DI during all of this?
When cranking, someone should be able to smell fuel at the exhaust. And when the plugs are removed, they also should smell of fuel.
Fuel injectors are all powered on one side, the ECU takes the other side to ground, at least on the 2.3L: NA.
If you do not detect fuel, can you hear the pump run when the ignition is turned on. Will only run for a short bit if you do not crank.
Check fuses: 16B,17,19,21,28,32
