Don't panic, enjoy your car and take care of it. Your V6 should be fine as long as you follow all of the guidelines for routine maintenance in the owner's manual--especially the timing belt and of course, oil changes. It sounds like you've read the archives so you know about the update kit and the change intervals. In a nutshell, belt gets changed at 35k,65k,95k (for free) and 125k,155k,185k, etc. You should get a new timing belt "kit" with a new tensioner and idler pulleys at least every 60k (every other belt) and every 30k if you are paranoid. (I'm doing it.)
$600 is about right to change the belt and do the other 30k service stuff. It's expensive but you have no choice; it must be done.
The handful of other stuff that has been problematic on some NG 900s (especially earlier ones) doesn't plague the V6 any more. I consider leaking valve cover gaskets just a nuisance, although the engine oil cooler is serious if that fails. (Repair about $500.)
