Is the temp indicator dropping at higher speeds? If so, that is consistant with a bad thermostat that is not closing as it should.
If you have the orginal stat, it is definately getting old.
Test for stat that does not close: cold engine, set the hand brake, start and idle in neutral, hood up, feel the upper rad hose. It should stay cold until the engine is hot and then would get hot suddenly as the stat opens. If the uppper rad hose slowly warms as the block warms up, the stat is bad.
diy? search for drs<underscore>install and read the cooling system related posts.
