Old linkage or new? Old one wears (aside from the famous bushing issue), gets very sloppy. Old -> new style solved a popping out problem I had. You have a 97, right?
That mount is bad in my 95 (visually confirmed), but it doesn't let the engine move too far. Standard test is to put the parking brake on and engage a gear abruptly. If broken, a mount will let the engine jump around (a little or alot depending on design). But from experience futzing with the linkage, it takes very, very little movement to get it out of gear.
Think of it this way: DIY for the mount and the new linkage is maybe $250 plus 1 easy hour and 1 really truly annoying hour. If it's still the trans, and you end up fixing that, too, these are parts you would do eventually anyway. If the gearbox is trash and you decide not to fix it, it was a small bet that it wasn't inside the gearbox. But I'd rather throw $250 and some labor at it than $2-3K and find out it was something cheap all along.
