For the last 18 months or so, I've had a irregularly recurrent problem with the transmission in my automatic 1994 900. Usually, it happens after the car has been sitting overnight, and it almost always happens after putting it into reverse gear.

Here is the typical scenario: After the car has sat overnight in the garage,I start the engine. I back it out of the garage and into the street, and when I put it into Drive, I get the dashboard light "Check Gear Box". At this point, I have almost no power from the transmission--as though the first through third gears were non-functional and only high gear was working.

This happened several times. I finally determined that I could get things back to normal by shutting the car down, waiting a short time (usually less than a minute), and then starting the car again.

Recently, I returned from an extended absence (two weeks), and upon backing the car out of the garage, I got the "Check Gear Box" light. As before, I shut the car down. But when I went to restart it, the whole thing was dead. There was absolutely no cranking or any sign of life whatsoever.

I did discover that a longer wait (ca. three minutes) returned everything to a normal state. This happened again the following day, with a 2-3 minute wait needed in order to get things reset so that normal operation could take place.

Has anyone else had this experience, either with a 1994 automatic 900 or any other Saab from this period? My mechanic has never seen this--he works only on Saabs--but he also noted that 1994 was the first model year of the new 900s and that this kind of idiosyncratic behavior might be expected to surface only now. He thinks that it might be a failing circuit board or something in the computer circuitry.

Any insight would be helpful. Obviously, the situation is not getting any better. I want to the avoid the day when the entire thing stops permanently.
