Had the same symptons several months ago. After ruling out head gasket, I ordered a remanufactured Turbo for my '97 900SE from eeuroparts.com for $750 (plus $250 core) Upon pulling the old turbo out, it was soaked in oil. The exhaust manifold was however normal. Oil is pumped into the turbo to lubricate the bearings and when it leaks, it vaporizes into heavy smoke out the tail pipe. Considering its atleast 4 hours to replace the turbocharger, $940 is pretty good. I replaced mine myself and took much longer however, the tech from SAAB said its about 4 hours. Make sure to get enough copper washers for oil/coolant lines (4 per line, and a special one with rubber). (They're only 30 cents a piece) The Oil in (turbo end) has a slighty smaller banjo bolt/nut and will need 2 smaller sized copper washers. I've never ordered from thesaabsite.com but they're a little cheaper.
