I lowered my '96 900 SET last fall with a set of springs from Abbott. I had no problems driving it through the Canadian winter, and I live out in the country were the roads did not get plowed often. Also I have never hit the bottom of the car on anything, so there has been no concern for my oil pan, and I drive my car quite hard. As for cost, that will depend on your mechanic, I have an incredible indy mechanic that charged me roughly $180 CDN to replace my spring and coils on my car. Actually it might have been cheaper, if I remember correctly he charged me $260 CDN labour to change the coils and struts, change my heater core, replace a tranny seal and replace my clutch.
All in all, I love how my car looks lowered and even more important love how it handles.
