I just changed my stat and fluids 3 weeks ago. I think that the best you can hope for is to drain coolant at the air bleeder nut. If I'm not mistaken that should drop the level to just below the t-stat level. You will lose quite a bit of coolant, though. Not all of it. Then just top it back up again.
That's the best I can think of.
